In Our Lady of Pity Parish people are prepared for Baptism, Confirmation, Marriage and RCIA on a one-to-one basis with the Parish Priest.

G

Infant Baptism

Through Baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as sons of God; we become members of Christ, are incorporated into the Church and made sharers in her mission. 'Baptism is the sacrament of regeneration through water in the word.'

Parents who wish to have children baptised are invited to approach the Parish Priest after Sunday Mass.

The Priest will arrange a period of individual preparation and the Baptism will usually take place on a Sunday afternoon.

G

Initiation for Adults (RCIA)

RCIA stands for 'Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults'.

This is the programme of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist whereby Adults are received into the Church.

Adults seriously wishing to know more about the Catholic Christian Faith with a view to seeking Adult Baptism or entry into Full Communion with the Catholic Church are invited to approach the Parish Priest.

He will meet with you over a period of several months to help you in your 'Journey of Faith' . This would usually culminate in reception as a Catholic at the Easter Vigil.

G

Confirmation

By the sacrament of Confirmation, the baptised are more perfectly bound to the Church and are enriched with a special strength of the Holy Spirit.

Young people (those in year 8 or above at School) wishing to be Confirmed should contact the Parish Priest.

He will arrange a period of instruction of about eight sessions to help in the understanding of the commitment to be made.

G

The Eucharist

The Eucharist is an action of thanksgiving to God. It is the sum and summary of our faith: 'Our way of thinking is attuned to the Eucharist, and the Eucharist in turn confirms our way of thinking.'

Communion will be taken to the house-bound sick on request to the Parish Priest.

Children usually make their First Holy Communion when they are about eight. Parents who wish their children to be prepared for this should apply to the Parish Priest. A number of sessions of preparation will normally be provided.

G

Marriage

This Sacrament signifies the union of Christ and the Church.

It gives spouses the grace to love each other in good times as well as bad with the love with which Christ has loved His Church.

Please arrange the date of your wedding in consultation with the Parish Priest as far in advance as possible.

Couples preparing for this Sacrament will normally spend three evenings with the Priest. Discussions will centre around the relationships of the couple and their commitment to Marriage. Also, they will look at Faith in the Family and, near the time of the Marriage, practical details of the Celebration.

G

Reconciliation

'Confession' of sins is followed by 'foregiveness' where, by the Priest's sacramental absolution, God grants 'pardon and peace'.

'Reconciliation' imparts to the sinner the love of God who reconciles.

This Sacrament of Forgiveness is given on Saturday from 10:00 to 10:30 am and at 5:00 to 5:45 pm before Evening Mass.

If required at any other other time then please approach the Parish Priest.

G

Annointing of the Sick

By the sacred annointing of the sick and the prayer of the Priests the whole Church commends those who are ill to the suffering and glorified Lord, that He may raise them up and save them.

This Sacrament is for Catholic Christians in a life-threatening situation. This includes those with an acute or chronic sickness or infirmity and may also be given prior to serious surgery.

The Parish Priest would like to be informed whenever a Catholic is in need of Prayer and the Sacraments during illness.
