| Notes 1923 Foundation Stone for Wrexham War memorial Hospital was laid by Edward Prince of Wales. Arthur and Mr J Mace (Clerk of Works) assisted in laying the stone.
There is alleged to be a photo of Arthur C Lee and Thomas T Lee taken at a Mayor's Ball they attended in Vernon Park Stockport Museum. The following is a press cutting presumed to date from about 1961. A photograph showing Mr G W Richardson, Mrs Lee, Mr A C Lee and Mr J Sutor accompanies the article. 42 YEARS WITH GERRARD'S Contracts manager retires TO MARK HIS 42 YEARS' SERVICE with J. Gerrard and Sons, Ltd., the Swinton firm of builders, Mr. Arthur C. Lee, Campbell-rd., Swinton, received a cheque at a dinner on Friday. Mr. Lee, who Is aged 75, retires as a contracts manager with his, firm. Present at the dinner was Mr. G. W. Richardson, a director, whose wife presented a bouquet of flowers to Mrs. Lee. One of the speakers at the dinner was a former apprentice and general foreman who had work6d under Mr. Lee. He was Mr. Ilarry Jones, now manager of Manchester Corporation Direct Works Housing Department The cheque was presented by Mr. J. Sutor on behalf of staff of J. Gerrard and Ltd., who had contributed to it. Mr. Lee said that he stsrted work in the building trade 61 years ago at Stockport Fire Station; and after an apprenticeship as a bricklayer, worke on his own account and built 15 cinemas. In those days, the labour cost of foundations and brickwork was only £150. He served In the Royal Engineers in the first world war and in 1919 started his long association with Gerrard's. Mr. Lee's father was a civil engineer and one of the men responsible for building the Standedge railway tunnel between Manchester and Huddersfield. His three sons are also engaged in the building and civil engineering industries. |
